Roundup – The End of the Holiday Weekend

Posted by

The weekend is over and it doesn’t seem like it was nearly long enough, so it’s time to turn on Netflix and chill out with a beer.

2017 Year in Review

Today we’re looking back at the Women’s March, the day after Trump’s inauguration. Although technically the march was for a number of women’s rights issues, it was also a large protest of Trump and therefore drew a lot of attention for how large it was (the largest protest in U.S. history). Michelle went to the march, while I had to follow along from home. This march was the start of a year in which women made it very clear that they would not be pushed aside anymore. Millions of women (and some men) marched to let the world know that their voices were not being heard (and, unsurprisingly, were dismissed in a tweet by the idiot president)

The march may have been a one day event, but women have been making Trump’s job hell ever since, which included many wins in the Virginia elections earlier this month.

Beer of the Day

Today’s beer of the day is Blackjack from Tilted Barn Brewery in Exeter, RI. I’ve been a big fan of their beer, including their pumpkin pale ale jack. This beer is a big letdown though. There is almost no pumpkin flavor and as a stout it just doesn’t stand up. It’s malty and sweet but not a lot of great flavor here.  The best thing about it was the awesome label on the can. Actually, on second thought…

The Real Beer of the Day

Let’s try this again and hope we pick out something better. Actually, it’s a lot better. Mikhail from Stone is a Russian Imperial Stout with espresso aged in bourbon barrels. Fresh out of the fridge, I thought maybe this wouldn’t be good. But like most stouts, it improved greatly as it warmed. There was a lot of coffee and chocolate and it was a bit boozy as well. But the best part of it (outside of being an amazing beer), is that it is named after Mikhail Bulgakov, author of The Master and Margarita.

Book Review of the Day

It’s been a few years and I don’t remember the details, but if you haven’t already done it, read The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. It’s one of the greatest novels I’ve ever read and wow, this is just a terrible review.  If you’re still reading, I really do apologize.  But the book has the devil and a giant cat and it’s funny. I’m going to have to go read it again.  Just trust me though, it’s amazing.

Final Thoughts

I’m ready for another vacation. Need to read a book!
