Roundup – January 2017

Posted by

There is news today, but since everything is crazy, let’s step back, take a drink, and look at January 2017.

2017 Year in Review

It’s been a few days since I’ve done this so lets look back to what happened in January after the inauguration.

Going back to the very beginning, it seemed like Trump was violating the emoluments clause of the Constitution, with the Trump Hotel accepting payments from foreign governments.

Kellyanne Conway coined the term “alternative facts” to describe the lies that were being put forth by the White House. Trump said that he lost the vote because of millions of illegal votes for Hilary. The first version of the Trump immigration ban was enacted (and quickly halted). The ban would have stopped hundreds of thousands of US residents from re-entering the country after going abroad. After acting Attorney General Sally Yates said she wouldn’t defend Trump’s immigration ban, he fired her.

Finally, on January’s final day, Trump chose Neil Gorsuch as his Supreme Court pick. This was a major reason why Republicans held their nose and supported Trump during the election, completing their theft of the seat that started when Mitch McConnell refused to hold a vote on former President Obama’s pick, leaving the Supreme Court a member short for nearly a year.

Beers of the Day

Today’s first beer is the 2017 Bourbon County Brand Barleywine from Goose Island in Chicago, IL. This beer is full of caramel and toffee and it’s basically candy in a bottle. This is one of my favorite beers and I wish I had more of it.

The second beer is Epic Brewing’s Triple Barrel Big Bad Baptist. Earlier this year I tried their Double Barrel Big Bad Baptist and it was great.  This one is good too, but not quite as good as the double barrel.  The main difference is that this one has coconut (along with the coffee and chocolate of the double). I love coconut, but in this case I think there is just too much going on. It’s an explosion of flavor that mostly works but is just a bit overwhelming.
